Cucina – A breakfast heaven

If you are ever lacking motivation to work out, try this; schedule an early morning run/trip to the gym/whatever activity floats your boat with a friend and THEN go out for breakfast afterwards. There is no better motivator than food. Well let me clarify – there is no better motivator than good food. That hill we ran up? Piece of cake knowing I was getting fed just a wee bit later. And off to Cucina we went!
You can sit down (we weren’t in a rush so this was our game plan) or grab something to go. I’m going to have to make a trip back to try out their assortment of pastries. Croissants, scones, muffins, cookies, tarts, mini cheesecake, you name it! The sandwiches also looked pretty decent.

As for our breakfast, Cassidy (my running and eating partner in crime) ordered the BBJ sandwich with bacon, tomato, basil, mayo and tomato jam. I’m still trying to figure out what the “BBJ” acronym stands for. Bacon, basil and jam? But the jam wasn’t even on the sandwich, it was in a little side dish! I’m so confused! Regardless of that little technicality she devoured the whole thing, which I always take to be a good sign.

I on the other hand, had been eyeing one particular menu item for months, just waiting for the right time to try it. And by “right time” I mean “any time”. So it was a no brainer ordering the wild mushrooms and poached eggs on toast. So creamy and decadent, a little bit salty from the parmesan cheese, with floral notes from thyme. Everything complimented the earthiness of the mushrooms so perfectly. The egg yolks were beautiful too – sunny, bright orange.

Usually I opt for sweets at breakfast. You’ll catch me going for that pain au chocolat or a gooey cinnamon bun. But this made me rethink that whole equation. It hit the spot after a long run, that’s for sure.
